Yesterday morning, Kelly Ripa of Live with Kelly and Michael was interviewing Christopher Walkin about an upcoming movie and working with a dog in the film. Kelly said: “But the gangster’s dog is uh, I mean if it’s a gangster it would have to be a dangerous, uh, Pit Bull kind of dog, right?” Making more than a few people angry.
Since Kelly’s ignorant comment about the breed yesterday morning, Pit-bull lovers have been showing their anger all over the shows Facebook page. It is thanks to comments like this that dogs are left in shelters, not adopted, dying there. If people have misconceptions about the breed, it is because of people like Kelly Ripa who perpetuate the stereotype.
There is a change.org asking Kelly to educate her self and spend time helping a pit-bull rescue. Please go and sign. If we don’t get the more public figures to understand, then they cannot begin to use that knowledge for the good of the breed.
According to testing by The National Canine Temperament Testing Association, the Golden Retriever, Poodle, Border Collie, English Setter, and numerous other breeds are considered more likely to become aggressive than the breeds commonly referred to as Pit Bulls. ~Modern Dog Magazine

I completely agree, I only wish someone such as yourself, who is so able to coherently able to convey their sentiment, had created the change.org petition. I feel uncomfortable signing something with so many exclamation points…with periods before them. Additionally, it makes somewhat vague or unreasonable requests (volunteer at the shelter for 6 months, and donate an undetermined amount of money). If anyone actually wants this to be taken seriously, they should make a different petition.
That said, former happy pitbull owner, the only reason I don’t have another one is moving to a very small apartment, coupled with desperately falling in love with the foster puppy I was bottle fed. Meggie, our Pitt, stayed with my mom to keep her company when I left the next, and she was an amazing companion, occasionally even volunteering with search and rescue, until last year, when she passed away under her favorite tree at home at 15. Meggie was a rescue, as we’re all the dogs I’ve owned, and it saddens me to think of the millions of people influenced by this perpetuating stereotype. I ave voulenteered with rescue operations over the years, and i’ve seen the damage this kind of ignorance can do, first hand.
Any dog in the wrong hands can be dangerous. Any dog in the right hands can be a wonderful pet. Any child in the wrong hands can grow up to be dangerous. Any child in the right hands can grow up to do great things and be a wonderful person. Discrimination is wrong, regardless of who or what it is again.
Pit bulls are truly loveable dogs.
I totaly agree.
